What is the history of Reiki?

What is the real history of Reiki? There are several stories about where Reiki originated and how Mikao Usui developed the therapy.
Reiki was originally, in Western histories, thought to have its roots in Tibet. However, this may not be the case. It is possible that Reiki is simply Japanese. A lot of the Tibetan links come through our knowledge of Buddhism - a great deal is known in the West about Tibetan Buddhism in comparison to how little is known of Japanese Buddhism.
There is also the Western tale of how Usui was a Christian teacher or minister who searched to discover how Jesus healed. We were given names of colleges and universities where Usui was supposed to have studied and worked. However, there is no record of his having been either a student or a teacher at these institutions.
Mikao Usui came from a Tendai Buddhist family - his clan were Samurai. However, many of the old Samurai families adopted Christianity when it became "fashionable" in Japan in order to boost their fortunes, so it is possible that there were some links to the christian story - albeit tenuous ones!
Mrs Takata, who was responsible for bringing Reiki to the West, may well have added the Christian link in order to have Reiki accepted in the USA! She certainly introduced the idea of charging vast sums of money to train in Reiki - in the region of $10,000 to study to Shinpi-den! However, without her the therapy of Reiki may never have come to the West...(I'll leave that thought with you.. .)
Whatever the "true" history of Reiki may be, it does not detract from the effectiveness of Reiki. It is, unarguably, a practical and effective form of treatment!
