A Reiki Doggie Story!

This is a REAL LIFE story about a much loved family pet and his journey with Reiki.

JD, a Japanese Akita, suffers from auto-immune deficiency syndrome. He became a part of my life in one of those strange "coincidences" that seem to run right through our Reiki journeys.

I had know his owner, Dawn, for several years but only as a casual acquaintance. She owns an aquarium shop in our area and our children attended the same primary school.

Early last year, 2006, I popped into the shop to buy some supplies for our one goldfish. I usually have some anecdote to recount in relation to this fish and, on that particular day, was recounting how he had seemed poorly and not himself. With my usual dramatic flair I described how I gave him Reiki.....and how much brighter he seemed.

Dawn seized on my mention of Reiki and said that a friend had suggested it might be beneficial to her dog, JD! Dawn went on to tell me how devastated the family was when they discovered their beautiful dog had auto-immune deficiency syndrome.

Dawn had heard of Reiki but was at a loss to know who to approach. Then I called into the shop!
I offered my services and called at the home later that week.
Firstly, let me say that I had no idea how big an Akita could be. Nor was I prepared for his appearance. In all honesty I was slightly apprehensive at our first meeting!!

As the picture shows, JD was in a pretty poor state. Due to continued high doses of steroids and anti-biotics, his skin was very thin. This led to bleeding whenever he knocked himself slightly. His energy levels were very low; he wasn't sleeping properly and was losing muscle tone and strength very quickly.

I did warn the family that there might be a healing crisis - he might get worse before he got any better - which they accepted, albeit apprehensively. I offered Reiki to JD and he eagerly accepted! On our first couple of meetings JD would offer his chest to me (this is the area of the thymus, the gland that produces the T-cells responsible for sustaining and renewing our immune systems). After a few minutes, as the heat increased, he would move away and lie down. Sometimes I would smooth his aura at other times, if he made it known that this was too hot, I would simply beam Reiki towards him. Once he had had enough, JD would move into the hall, usually falling into a deep (and noisy!) sleep. We followed this pattern twice a week for about four to six weeks. Although there didn't seem to be any outward signs of improvement in his condition I felt his energies were improving. There was also a "lift" in his general demeanour.

In March/April of last year, JD went for his regular check-up with his consultant. I arrived at the home that evening to find everyone upset. The consultant had not been happy with JD's condition. JD had been given a maximum of six weeks before the consultant felt it would be kinder to put him to sleep. Devastation.

But did we give up? No way!! We continued with the Reiki sessions. I felt that this was his healing crisis and anyway, even if the consultant was correct, we could at least offer JD a better quality of life in his remaining weeks.

Six weeks came and went. Dawn was able to reduce the steroids. JD began to improve markedly. The biggest set-back was when I went on holiday in July and JD got an infection whilst I was away. However, he managed to pull through it much more easily and quickly than before.

Dawn has now trained in Reiki 1 herself so JD is never short of a quick session. He continues to go from strength to strength, climbing the stairs now, enjoying his regular walks, making his presence known! He may never be wholly fit again and may not live to a ripe old age but, through Reiki, we feel the quality of his life has improved dramatically!

I believe the pictures speak for themselves!
